A Profile of the Assistant Dean
Patricia E. Sloan, EdD, RN, FAAN
Assistant Dean and Professor
Dr. Sloan was employed by Chicago State University as the Grants Facilitator for College of Health Sciences through the Office of Sponsored Programs during 1999-2000. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from The Ohio State University, majoring in nursing; Master of Arts, Master of Education, and Doctor of Education degrees (in public health nursing services/supervision, public health nursing education, and teaching in educational institutions, respectively) from Teachers College, Columbia University. She was recognized as an outstanding Alumnus by the College of Nursing of the Ohio State University in 1984, the same year she married Robert Elston, her husband of approximately two decades. She was awarded the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award in 1985, and inducted into the Teachers College Nursing Hall of Fame in 1999.
Dr. Sloan served in various teaching, recruitment, project management, research-oriented, and academic leadership positions during more than three decades of employment in the Hampton University School of Nursing. She also served as the Assistant International Student Advisor, and as a guest lecturer throughout the campus on how to study effectively using SQ5R. Most innovative was the establishment of the M. Elizabeth Carnegie Nursing Archives with oral histories, educational information and photographs by and about Blacks in nursing. Her publications are primarily in historical research. Additional research interests center on people who are elderly, affected by HIV/AIDS, health-related behavior/decisions, and education. She is a registered nurse in Illinois, and inVirginia, where she is a Professor Emeritus, School of Nursing, Hampton University. She retired from the US Army Reserve Nurse Corps as LTC after 22 years of service. Dr. Sloan is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. She returned to Chicago State University as the Assistant Dean in the College of Health Sciences on July 1, 2003. Dr. Sloan has directed the HIV/AIDS Policy and Research Institute since May 2004.
