Mission Statement

The mission of the Teacher Development Center (TDC) is to assist students to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to be highly qualified future teachers and other school leaders and personnel in licensure and non-licensure professions. A major task is to prepare for the Test of Academic Proficiency in Basic Skills (Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, Language Arts, & Writing), the Illinois Content Area Examinations, and the Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT) Examination as required by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and adminstered by the Illinois Certification Testing System.

In addition, the Teacher Development Center (formerly known as the Teacher's Writing Center (TWC) and later as the Teacher's Writing and Resource Center (TWRC) which is funded by the Teacher Quality Enhancement Project) works to integrate language skills across the curriculum for all Education students (and alumnae) in their preparation for teaching. The Center uses competent individuals to tutor students for all writing needs, including English entrance exams, research papers, critiques, lesson plans, summaries, theses, resumes, and letters. Oral language support is also given, as well as tutoring in mathematics and reading & literacy.

Basic Skills Workshop Courses (five-weeks) are offered in Reading & Literacy and in Mathematics. The Reading & Literacy course integrates the Reading, Language Arts & Writing standards. Classes are also instructed in basic research papers and bibliographical style. Along with these services, a computer lab allows use of computer-assisted instruction, processing and printing of papers, Internet research, and access to other University services.

The Teacher Development Center falls under the supervision of the College of Education Assistant Dean for Professional Education & Development Services.

Members of the CTC/CSU Alumni Association are welcome to use our services, as space is available.
