Elizabeth
began her teaching
career as a 4th grade teacher at Inter-AmericanMagnet School in Chicago.Inter-American is a dual language school where
the
curriculum focuses on
the history of the Americas
and instilling a sense of social consciousness in students.While at Inter-American, Elizabeth worked with outstanding
teachers
and families, all of whom shared the goal of bilingualism and
biculturalism for
the entire school community.
At
CSU, Elizabeth
continues work
in bilingual education but with a different student population.For the past 5 years she as been the
coordinator of Project Nueva Generación, a “Grow Your Own” teacher
education program that prepares and educates community leaders to teach in
their
local
schools.Project Nueva Generación
is
collaboration between the bilingual program at CSU and the Logan Square
Neighborhood Association.
Elizabeth
earned her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from UIC in December 2005.Her dissertation focuses on the educational
experiences of some of the students in Project Nueva Generación
and is
titled:Latinas in Higher
Education:Learning from their Experiences.
