Thesis Track
PE 5000 (400) Research Methods in Physical Education and Sport 3 hours
Survey of research methods. Techniques of research and research ethics in physical education and sport. Identification and critique of research design; developing a research proposal. Use of APA manuscript style. May not be taken concurrently with PE 5230.
PE 5230 (423) Research Statistics in Physical Education and Sport 3 hours
Statistical analysis and reporting. Hypothesis testing and confidence intervals. Use of computers (Microsoft Excel) to analyze data.
Critique of results and discussion of a research report. Use of APA manuscript style. May not be taken concurrently with PE 5000 (400).
PE 5910 (491) Master's Thesis 6 hours
Independent research with the intent of publishing the completed manuscript.

Oral Examination
A presentation and oral defense of the thesis project is required.

PE 5030 Motor Learning 3 hours
Graduate level application and understanding of gross motor function.
PE 5090 Psychology of Sport 3 hours
Relationship between psychological factors and sport, exercise, and physical activity. How psychological factors influence participation patterns in sport and exercise. How participation in physical activity affects psychological makeup. Examine theory, research, and professional practice related to psychological interventions in sport and exercise.
PE 5406 Analysis of Teaching 3 hours
An analysis, critique, and study of the major research issues in teaching physical education. Inquiry into major questions and significant findings along with the methods used to address these questions.
PE 5110 (411) Organization and Administration of PE 3 hours
Facilities, equipment, space, time, costs, staff, faculty, administration, budget, buildings, and grounds, etc. involved in of a physical education program.
PE 5160 (416) Curriculum 3 hours
Curriculum construction; content, analysis and evaluation. Examination and comparative study of existing curricula.
PE 5270 Epidemiology of Physical Activity 3 hours (Note: PE 5000 and PE are prerequisites)
Survey of health-related aspects of exercise and physical activity from the perspective of the science of epidemiology to include: biological mechanisms for healthy adaptations to physical activity and exercise, prevalence of leading risk factors of illness and death in the United States, and determinants of physical activity participation.

Comprehensive Written Exam
A comprehensive written exam covering all coursework is required.

Cooper Institute Certification Workshop 3 credits (offered as PE 5950 & PE 5990)
Click here for a PDF of the 2008 brochure for the Certification Workshops at Joliet Jr. College. The cost of the workshop is $600.00 and the cost for the 3 CSU credits is $603.00. So, if you do the workshop your cost is 600.00. If you do the workshop and want it to count as 3 elective credits toward your PE masters at CSU, your cost is $1203.00. Also, you should keep in mind that if you have taken the IAHPERD course, you should register for the Joliet Course using a course number that is different from that of the IAHPERD course because some districts won't accept two courses with the same number.
