Dr. Lisa C. Pesavento
Welcome to Chicago State University where quality
education is viewed as a University-wide mission and quality
teachers
and educational personnel are developed in the College of Education
through our rigorous undergraduate and graduate programs. We’re
pleased that you took the time to visit our web site!
Our Standard of Leadership is Second to None
Not
only has the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher
Education (NCATE) accredited the College of Education
since
1954, but the accreditation was also deemed exemplary. In addition,
we strive to focus on strengthening accountable PreK-12
learning. That means that the impact of our teacher candidates’ teaching
on students’ learning is extremely important to faculty,
staff and administrators. Please take a moment to access our
College of Education College Directory at http://www.csu.edu/collegeofeducation/
collegedir.htm.
Our assessment procedures, including graduate follow-up surveys
to new graduates and their supervisors, help us to continually
improve our programs in the College of Education, where we
believe that all children can learn and all teacher candidates
can succeed.
Our College Partnerships are Second to None
We place great emphasis on preparing teacher
candidates to teach and lead in urban environments, and even
more importantly,
in high-need settings, in hard-to-staff and low-performing
schools. We do not just teach theory, but we put you in real
schools periodically throughout your program, to observe, learn
and practice. National Academy of Education (NAE) President,
Nel Noddings, reminds us that “teachers are a scarce
resource in America today and one that is distributed unevenly.” Whether
you are a new high school graduate or a transfer student from
one of our aligned junior colleges or City of Chicago community
colleges, we strive to support, nurture and assist you in making
your career dreams come true. Our teacher candidates
go through a systematic preparation program guided by real-world assessments
and proven evidence-based benchmarks to improve their professional
practice, which ultimately benefits their students. You can
view our College of Education Student Handbook at
http://www.csu.edu/collegeofeducation/coldocs.htm to note the
current College of Education policies and procedures
for teacher candidates in our initial and advanced teacher
preparation programs.
Our Commitment to Lifelong Learning is Second to None
We
encourage and recruit our graduates to apply for National
Board Certification status and currently have
identified numerous
College of Education alums who continue to grow as
teacher leaders, serve on our committees, assist
us with writing curricula and mentor our new teacher graduates.
You may recall that National
Board Certification is the only means to achieve the Illinois
Master Teaching Certificate and is also an option for achieving
or renewing the Illinois Standard Teaching Certificate. Go
to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)
web link at http://www.nbpts.org/ to
view our progress and note our Annual Distinguished Educator
(DEA) Ceremony honoring
our alums with public recognition, as many are Nationally Board
Certified Teachers (NBCTs). Additionally, we’ve partnered
with the Chicago Public Schools National Board Resource Center
to open a satellite office in the College of Education (ED
201). This Center opened Spring 2006 and provides
services which are aligned to our Teachers’ Writing and
Resource Center where our students and alums can access the
instructional
resources
that will help to support their use of best teaching practices.
Our Vision for the Future is Second to None
By now we hope you’ve heard that we are also accredited
by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA)
and the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) to offer
a doctoral program, or Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, beginning
in fall 2005. Our advanced degree programs develop outstanding
educational personnel who manage the instructional programs
in our schools, improve curricula and serve in leadership roles
in those same schools, so we’ve also provided a visual
career continuum for you to review and keep. Just visit our
web link at http://www.csu.edu/CollegeOfEducation/

and Leadership at CSU’s College of Education or our Student
Career, Recruiting and Salary Document.
Our Rigorous and Highly Regarded Non-Teaching Programs
are Second to None
The Department of Special Education, Early Childhood and Bilingual
Elementary Education (SEB) offers a Child Studies Program
option leading to a Bachelor of Science in Education degree
in Early
Childhood (does not lead to Type 04 certificate). Completion
of the Early Childhood Program qualifies students to work with
children and families in a variety of non-public school early
childhood settings such as: social service and governmental
agencies, hospitals, parks and recreation agencies, and private
schools. We prepare students for a variety of leadership positions:
practitioner in a child care setting, Head Start facilitator,
education and parent coordinator, program director, child life
specialist, child abuse prevention specialist, and early childhood
advocate.
The Department of Technology and Education’s (T&ED)
graduate program leads to a Master of Science in
Education Degree in Technology and Education (MS-TE). The program prepares technology leaders for education, business, and
industry and does not lead to teacher certification. Courses are sequenced
to develop competencies necessary for program planning, curriculum development,
staff development, program assessment, evaluation, and facility management.
Program completers typically teach in post-secondary settings and serve in
leadership positions as technology trainers, directors, coordinators, and specialists.
The
National Recreation and Park Association/American Association for Leisure
and Recreation accredited the Department
of Health, Physical Education and
Recreation’s Recreation Program leading to a Bachelor of Science
degree in Recreation in 2003. We are a recognized leader in
providing undergraduate and graduate academic preparation, continuing
education,
research and service
to the parks and schools through the Recreation profession in the Chicago
metropolitan area (visit the Leisure Education
in the Schools Taskforce Report to understand the history of the Leisure Education in the Schools movement).
Our Desire to Assist You is Second to None

be part of a profession that makes all other professions
possible,

course offerings. Hope to hear from you soon!
