Assessment in the History Undergraduate Major

The following standards for measuring the program effectiveness of the undergraduate major in history are in effect:

1. Program Assessment Exam—final semester. All history undergraduate students must take a comprehensive content and skills assessment test in their final semester before graduation. The purpose of this test is to measure whether our students have achieved satisfactory content knowledge in pre-modern and modern history, as well as subject areas in United States, Western Civilization, and World Civilization. This test is intended to measure program standards and will not affect a student’s ability to graduate.

2. Research paper on file. All students will be asked to submit a research paper to be kept on file in the department for accreditation purposes. This paper must have received a grade of at least a “B” or must be revised with the appropriate faculty member to reach this standard.

3. Alumni Surveys. One year after graduating, the history department will contact its graduates to answer a survey indicating how well its program facilitated their career and/or educational goals.

4. Employer Survey. One year after graduating, the department will wish to contact the employers of its graduates to determine the degree to which our program has contributed to their success on the job.
