HISTORY
Requirements updated for Fall 2004
It is important realize that course requirements may change during the time you begin your program in History at Chicago State University . In some cases you may be exempt from new requirements. If curriculum changes are mandated by the state board of education, however, you will not be exempt and must accept the changes to the program. Mid-program curriculum changes are more common for History/Secondary Education majors than for liberal arts history majors. The Department Chair and Advisors will inform you as soon as possible if or when any changes take place in the program. The following are recent and anticipated curriculum changes
Fall 2004
Foreign Language requirement (6hrs.) applies to all history majors entering in Fall 2004.
Spring 2005
Math requirement for history/secondary education majors will change. Coursework in "Special Education" will change.

HISTORY MAJOR - (HIST) 39 CREDIT HOURS
REQUIRED COURSES - 18 credit hours: History 120, 121, 130, 131, 220; Political Science 101
ELECTIVE HISTORY COURSES - 21 credit hours
Minor Sequence All history majors must select a minor. Completion of 18-21 credit hours chosen with the approval of the departmental academic advisor from any one discipline in the College of Arts and Sciences. Free electives: completion of 21 credit hours chosen with the approval of the departmental academic advisor.
SECONDARY TEACHING OPTION (HSST) & HISTORY/CERTIFICATION (TCHI) 42 CREDIT HOURS
(For students entering in Fall 2004, specific requirements have changed from 39 to 42 credit hours).
REQUIRED COURSES - 18 credit hours History 120, 121, 130, 131, 220, 271
AMERICAN HISTORY ELECTIVES - 6 credit hours
EUROPEAN/WORLD HISTORY ELECTIVES - 12 credit hours (One course must be in Ancient/Medieval History.)
REQUIRED SUPPORTIVE COURSES - 12 credit hours Political Science 101; Psychology 141, 204; and *Economics 101 (for students entering 8/2004)
GEOGRAPHY MINOR -18 credit hours Geography is a required minor for History/Secondary Education students and Certification Students. Students must meet with an advisor in the Geography Department to discuss specific minor requirements.
The following sequence of courses will be required: Geog 101, 131; +3 hours in either Geog 202, 204, or 316; +3 hours in either 211, 212, or 213; +6 hours in Geography elective at the 200 or 300 level. These reflect the new minor requirements in Geography and will help our history students pass the Illinois State Certification Exam.
PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS prescribed by the College of Education: (ELCF 152, ELCF 200, ELCF 353; Ed. 306; Psych 210; Special Ed. 301; Social Studies Methods 363 and Student Teaching 375).
REQUIRED SUPPORTIVE COURSES - Standards: Since the fall of 1988 the following criteria have been required of all secondary education majors: NO GRADE BELOW "C" IS ACCEPTED FOR ANY COURSE
G.P.A. of 2.50 for admission to program G.P.A. of 2.50 for graduation 12.0 Reading Score for admission to the program A minimum G.P.A. of 2.50 in all courses in history A minimum G.P.A. of 2.50 in all courses in the minor field Formal admission by the Committee on Admissions to the College of Education.
STUDENTS MUST PASS THE BASIC SKILLS PORTION OF STATE CERTIFICATION EXAM BEFORE APPLYING TO THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
